Police are looking at every angle following the escape of a rape convict while being transported to the Tawau Prison by escort police on Tuesday.
Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Abdul Rashid Harun said police were looking at every angle if there was any element of negligence and would not hesitate to take action against the police personnel who were assigned to escort the convict from the Tawau court to the Tawau Prison.
Abdul Rashid also said that a manhunt had been launched for the convict, identified as Faizal Iman, and the operation is being led by Tawau police chief ACP Fadil Marsus.
Faizal Iman, 36, from Kampung Aman Jaya, Semporna, escaped around 5.40pm on June 14 while being taken to a police lorry in the compound of the Tawau court after being sentenced to 20 years’ jail and 20 strokes of the cane for rape under Section 376 of the Penal Code.
The convict was clad in a maroon coloured shirt and short trousers with many pockets when he made the daring escape.
Abdul Rashid urged the public not to make any speculation on the incident which could be blown out of proportion.
“We are doing everything we can to hunt down the convict and we will make an arrest soon,” he said.
Abdul Rashid also urged anyone with information on the whereabouts of the convict to immediately contact the nearest police station.
Meanwhile, Abdul Rashid witnessed the handing over of duties for the Department of Crime Prevention and Community Safety from SAC Datuk Hamdan Majid to newly appointed SAC Awang Besar Dullah at the State police contingent yesterday.
Hamdan, who will retire at the end of this month, will be replaced by Awang Besar who was previously the head of the Special Investigation Team/Technical of the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom).
