Well done everybody, you have really surpassed yourselves this time.

It has only been a week since Rebecca Guildford put out a post explaining how her cousin Hallee Sorenson had spent her 18th birthday alone when her classmates failed to show up for a party.

Alongside a heartbreaking image of the teenager, who has autism, she pleaded for people to send in cards to lift her spirits this year.

And the world has responded in a MASSIVE way.

So far Bangor post office in Maine has received more than 10,000 cards, letters and parcels and as Halle’s 19 birthday is on July 2, that number could rise dramatically.

According to Stuff.Nz, there has been so much mail it has been transported in trucks.

Gifts include those from soldiers in Afghanistan, a message from the entire state of Ohio and a doll from NASA.

Her aunt Robyn has thanked well-wishers for their kind thoughts.

‘Our gratitude is hard to put into words,’ she said.

‘This is all reaffirming that most people are kind and loving, and that we all have the capacity for caring about others, even if they’re many miles away.

‘We’re all extended family.’
