VIENTIANE, LAOS

The Ministers of ASEAN, who were on a working visit for the 15th ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Meeting in Luang Prabang on June 4, paid a courtesy call to Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.

At the amicable talks at the Luang Prabang Provincial Administration Office, Prime Minister Thongloun highly valued the visit to Laos by the ASCC Ministers as a significant contribution to enhancing the friendly relations and cooperation between the Lao PDR and their respective countries, especially in socio-cultural affairs.

Several important documents, including those proposed by the Lao government, were approved at the recently held ASCC meeting.

The approvals included the Vientiane Declaration on Transition from Informal Employment to Formal Employment towards Decent Work Promotion in ASEAN, the Vientiane Declaration on Reinforcing Cultural Heritage Cooperation in ASEAN, and the ASEAN Declaration on Strengthening Education for Out-of-School Children.

The approved documents will be submitted to the coming 28th ASEAN Summit to be held in Vientiane Capital later this year.

In their joint statement, the ASEAN ministers expressed their support for the ASEAN chairmanship of the Lao PDR and reaffirmed their prioritised plans of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community for 2016 and years to come.

They also recognised the progress made in amending the Vientiane Declaration on Reinforcing Cultural Heritage Cooperation in ASEAN and the ASEAN Joint Statement on Biodiversity for the 13th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity 2016.

They exchanged points of view on the contributions of the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community to the performance of ASEAN member countries’ permanent representatives and discussed the findings of the study of Timor Leste’s accession to ASEAN membership.

The ministers asked the ASEAN Secretariat to report the study findings to the Socio-Cultural Community Senior Officials’ Committee and the ASEAN Coordinating Council Working Group.
