Fire razed down the workers quarters at an oil palm plantation located about an hour’s drive from here early yesterday.
According to district Fire and Rescue Department, they rushed a team of eight firefighters, led by senior officer II Iskandar Aus to the scene, upon receiving a distress call at 3.40am.
“It was indeed a challenging operation as we had some problems with the ferry service. Once we arrived at the plantation at 5.50am, the main gate was closed. We had no choice but to break it down for us to go in and put out the fire that ravage one for the (quarters) blocks,” Iskandar said, mentioning that Fire and Rescue investigative officers Thadeus Boinon and Mohd Shamlie Radaee were with him as well.
“It’s really fortunate that nobody was at that block at the time of incident as the workers were on Gawai holiday,” Iskandar added.
The firefighters recovered remnants of many items at the site after putting out the flames – among them were burnt motorcycles, parts of a four-wheel drive vehicle and also a gun, possibly a shotgun. The department is still investigating the cause of the fire.
