VIENTIANE, LAOS

Vocational education administrators nationwide met at the annual Conference for Technical and Vocational Education on May 30 to discuss upgrading vocational education to ensure the increased enrolment of students.

The meeting was held in Vientiane Capital on May 30-31 in attendance of Deputy Minister of Education and Sports, Mr Kongsy Sengmany, and general directors from the government, private universities, and colleges countrywide.“The meeting heard about the implementation of the vocational development and training plan for 2016-2020,” Mr Kongsy said.Participants at the meeting shared ideas and discussed the vocational development and training plan to achieve by 2020 an expansion of colleges, vocational and poly-technique schools, and vocational training centers in Vientiane Capital and some provinces to accommodate the enrolment of students in vocational schools.  The objective is to have around 60% of graduates of upper secondary schools enrol at vocational schools.

The students will be advised what vocational subjects they should study to ensure that they can get a job after completing school. Under the plan, from now through 2020, vocational education administrators will expand training institutes and vocational training centers for teachers in order to meet the demand for skilled labourers.
