ISB, FBA and Shooting Stars Brunei Basketball Attended a Basketball Workshop

BERAKAS, BRUNEI-MUARA

International School Brunei (ISB) with the cooperation of the Filipino Basketball Association Brunei (FBA Brunei) and Shooting Stars Brunei Basketball, recently attended the Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam's Basketball Train the Trainer Workshop.

The workshop was attended by 10 volunteers from various schools and was split into a morning and afternoon session.

The morning session was on theory, which gave an introduction of the Special Olympics community in Brunei and across the world. A briefing titled 'Intellectual Disabilities' was delivered by clinical psychologist, Pengiran Hartini Pengiran Haji Tahir.

In the afternoon, participants had a practical session where they got to play with 15 Special Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) basketball players alongside SOBD basketball coaches - Coach Ken and Coach Stephen. There was also a basketball training session catered for those with intellectual disabilities.

SOBD is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) established in March 2004 with the vision of striving towards changing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through sports. Since its establishment in Brunei, the organisation has educated and encouraged the public and young students, giving them opportunities to work with athletes with intellectual disabilities through sports participation.

Special Olympics Basketball has been in Brunei for two years and the coaching team is now working towards their ultimate goal - creating a team of basketball players to represent SOBD for the first time in basketball during the next Special Olympics World Games scheduled to be held in 2019.

The newly-elected SOBD Board Chairman, Lt Col (Rtd) Pengiran Haji Rambli bin Pengiran Haji Bunut was present to take part in the practical session of the workshop together with SOBD athletes.

Rachel Lee, the current Sports Director of SOBD said, "The workshop for Special Olympics Basketball is only at its first phase towards reaching our ultimate goal in 2019. We are looking forward to conduct more SOBD sports workshops in order to gather more coaches in Brunei to assist SOBD in coaching."
