Romania Opens Over 6 Bln USD Financing Lines For Transport Infrastructure

Romanian government on Monday announced to open financing appeals for transport infrastructure projects on a budget of 5.8 billion euros (6.44 billion U.S. dollars).
According to a release of European Funds Ministry, the financing lines are for development projects of road, railway and subway infrastructure, and budgeted from the allocation of the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme (LIOP) 2014-2020.
The financing applications can be submitted from June 1 to Dec. 31, 2018, informed the ministry, adding that infrastructure projects not finalized at the end of 2015 and new projects are equally eligible for financing.
The financing for road infrastructure, with a relevant budget of 3.27 billion euros, aims to remove bottlenecks and missing links in the EU road infrastructure; the railway projects, budgeted to be 1.85 billion euros, are intended to complete the Rhine-Danube railway corridor by upgrade the country's railway from western border with Hungary to the Black Sea port of Constanta; while the Bucharest metro will get a budget of 682 million euros to improve the only underground transportation infrastructure in the country.
LIOP 2014-2020 includes proposed interventions from non-reimbursable European funds allocated to Romania during the period, to boost investment in transport, environment and energy sectors.
The total value of the operational program is approximately 12 billion euros, of which some 9.5 billion euros represent the non-refundable contribution of the EU.
