BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The 21st Baiduri Masters concluded with a prize presentation ceremony attended by Dr. Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Muda Abdul Fattaah, a member of the Board of Directors at Baiduri Bank, which was held at the Indah Hall of the Royal Brunei Recreation Club last night.

Tony Haji Karim emerged champion of the Baiduri Masters 2016 after carding a total of 72, one stroke over first runner-up Zulhilmi Rosli with a final round of 73 while last year's champion Seruji Haji Setia settled for second runner-up with a total of 76.

Overnight leader Moksin Jinaidi and leader on the first weekend Idris Osman dropped a few places in 7th and 8th respectively.

The new champion donned the coveted green jacket which was assisted by Seruji on stage before proceeding to lift the prestigious Challenge Trophy - an honour only bestowed to an exclusive list of golfers.

Tony expressed his delight of finally having his hands on the trophy after setting his sights on the trophy since 2011.

"It's a tough today but it has been a good day for me," beamed Tony in an interview with the Bulletin.

Asked if there is anyone he would like to thank following his big score, Tony said, "I would like to thank all golfers for their support especially during the final day where most of my fellow golfers gave me a big support."

"It has been very tough because there were a lot of good players, ex pros especially Seruji, the defending champion but I managed to play well."

Tony also paid tribute to his closest rival Zulhilmi during the final round for pushing him all the way.

"Zulhilmi Rosli also played good today. I only won it by one stroke," he concluded.

Meanwhile, Vanessa Boumba Marie Akie carded a total of 72 to claim the ladies division while Irwan Haji Ismal took down the junior division title with a total of 72.

The event began with a welcoming speech by Pierre Imhof, the Chief Executive Officer of Baiduri Bank who stressed the significance of the competition which has been serving the community for more than two decades since its inception in 1995.

"The Baiduri Masters has grown alongside us, and is undeniably the largest and most prestigious annual golfing event in the country.

"This year alone, we saw 954 golfers play a fantastic game of golf over these two weekends," said the Chief Executive Officer.

"We are honoured to provide this opportunity every year for our golfers to make a difference in the local community.

"We recognise and appreciate that the success of the Baiduri Masters is owed to the continuous support of our event partners and the passionate following of the tournament from our growing community of golfers," he said.
