Romania will contribute 2,184 troops, police officers and civilians for missions abroad in 2017, the country's Supreme Council for National Defense (CSAT) decided Friday.
These forces are available for missions led by NATO, the European Union, the UN and the OSCE, President Klaus Iohannis announced after the CSAT meeting held at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.
The forces deployed by the National Defense Ministry amount to 1,401 troops and civilians, while those sent by the Interior Ministry include 783 servicemen and police officers.
The total number for missions abroad in 2017 will be decreased by 527 compared to this year.
The CSAT, which includes the president, the prime minister, the ministers of defense and foreign affairs, and intelligence chiefs, is Romania's top-most executive body able to decide on security and defense issues.
Romania began to send troops to Afghanistan in July 2002, as part of NATO's mission in the country. The action was the country' s first military mission abroad after World War II. As many as 27 Romanian soldiers died there in the past 13 years.
