Sambli bin Haji Nawi scored the winning spotkick in the penalty shoot-out to hand the Department of Youth and Sports (JBS) the Futsal Championship title at the expense of the Community Development Department (JAPEM) after the scores had ended in a stalemate at the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex during the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Cup last night.
Former national player Irwan Mohammad retained much of his silky touches reminiscent of his prime years for the Wasps in the late 1990s and was the main service provider for his JAPEM team which was begging for a finish.
The veteran may have played his way through the ministry selection with his passing range and his vision which was one of the reasons why the tournament took place.
The objective of the tournament was to make early preparations in the selection of futsal players to represent the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports in competitions especially inter-ministry futsal tournaments.
JBS principal forward Md Shahjohan bin Haji Shari had three decent opportunities in the second half to find the opener but a combination of good defending and the absence of his fortunes prevented them from taking the lead.
Irwan's former national team-mate Fadlin bin Galawat also made a cameo appearance in the second half.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports defeated the Language and Literature Bureau 2-0 with goals coming from national player Mohd Azry bin Jahari and Hazwan bin Hamzah via a free-kick to claim third place.
A total of six teams took part in the competition including Brunei History Centre and the Museums Department.
The guest of honour at the event was Dato Paduka Dr. Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, who later presented the prizes to the winners.
