BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The tourism sector has the potential to realise the development efforts in the internationalisation of the Malay Language worldwide. Elements such as daily activities, business routines, sociocultural and socio-economy of the local community are among the tourism products that make up the main element to the branding medium and promotion of the Malay Language image. This was stressed upon by Yang Berhormat Retired Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in his keynote address at the opening of the Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia and Malaysia language Council, MABBIM Language Seminar, yesterday morning.

Yang Berhormat said the branding of local products should also be improved by ensuring the coordination of the correct use of the Malay Language, which will not bring about confusion and derogatory remarks in writing. The local community should be equally responsible and committed in ensuring the tourism products exploitation can be synergised in promoting the Malay Language to the international arena. A strong mind-set and integrity towards the potential and capability of the Malay Language should be instilled in every practitioner or speaker of the Malay Language as this will more or less influence the number of speakers, empower the collection of words that has a high knowledge value, the spread of a broad geography supported by the excellence of the race that speaks the language, that, with it, can generate a strong tourism industry with Malay Language internationalisation values, assimilated innovatively and creatively.

The function ran concurrently with the launch of a MABBIM published book titled "Impak Syarahan MABBIM Terhadap Penggembangan Bahasa Melayu/Indonesia" or Impact of MABBIM Lectures on the Development of the Malay/Indonesian Language.

More than 200 participants are attending the 2-day seminar, which among other matters acts as a medium for regional knowledge sharing and exchange of ideas between the three MABBIM member nations through the tabling as well as dissemination of the Malay and Indonesian Language development to make it as a language of high knowledge. This year's seminar carries the theme "Industri Pelancongan Sebagai Wahana Pengantarabangsaan Bahasa Melayu" or The Tourism Industry as a Medium of Malay Language Internationalisation. This year, Brunei Darussalam is hosting the MABBIM Conference Network comprising the 31st Experts Conference, MABBIM Language Seminar and 57th MABBIM Executive Conference.
