BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Touching on the policy of privatization and corporatization, the Minister of Communications shared some developments regarding the privatization of the Muara Port Container Terminal on the 21st of February last year, and the corporatization of the Ports Department and Marine Department to become the Maritime and Ports Authority or MPA, which took effect from the 28th of September 2017. According to the Minister of Communications, the establishment of PBMP and the privatization of the container terminal have brought about positive changes to the quality of service at Muara Port in 2017 compared to the previous year.

According to Yang Berhormat, the changes have resulted in a 37 percent increase in productivity in terms of container handling from ships. The move has also resulted in a 48 percent reduction in terms of Whole Year Turnaround time from 60 minutes in 2016 to only 30.8 minutes in 2017. The improvement in the quality of services is hoped to attract more shipping activities in the country. Yang Berhormat added that the privatization of the container terminal has also opened up job opportunities in the shipping field to locals. Since taking over Muara Container Terminal, the Muara Port Company Sendirian Berhad, MPC currently has 163 employees, where 87 percent or 141 employees are comprised of locals. The move to privatize the Muara Container Terminal has also helped to reduce spending costs borne by the government for maintenance and operations by 8.6 million dollars annually.
