BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The First Meeting of the 14th Session of the Legislative Council continued yesterday with several questions which have been given notice and the deliberations on the direction and focus of the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports and Ministry of Health in the budget allocations for the Financial Year 2018/2019. The issue regarding the toll payment for the bridge connecting the Brunei Muara and Temburong districts requires continuous evaluation and discussion in a holistic and detailed manner and using the "whole of nation" approach. Yang Berhormat Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohammad Yusof, Minister of Communications explained the matter in response to a question raised on the toll payment when the bridge is completed.

The Minister of Communications added that this approach takes into account several important aspects such as from the infrastructure, social and economic perspectives of Brunei Darussalam. Touching on whether Temburong district residents will be exempted from toll payments, Yang Berhormat said that this issue will also require a policy-level approach by various stakeholders, adding that the Ministry of Communications with the cooperation of the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Development and the Energy and Industry Department are reviewing the policy through meetings and consultations with a number of stakeholders including government and private agencies as well as the grassroots level, especially the public and residents in the area. Yang Berhormat said this effort includes referring to the National Committee for the Temburong Bridge planned project, which is actively carrying out the bridge's construction, adding that decisions regarding the need for toll payments will be timely coordinated with the timeline of the bridge's completion
