Semada Paddy Research Project

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Both varieties of the hybrid Sembada B9 and Sembada 188 paddy are expected to yield 6 metric tons of rice per hectare in one season.   A study showed the yield was much higher than the yield of the Laila variety which was 3 metric tons per hectare of land in a season.   The 3 months study on the Semada varieties was conducted at the Wasan Agriculture Development Area in Mukim Pengkalan Batu.

The Semada Paddy research Project was also a success of the Agriculture and Agrifood Department in identifying the variety which was capable of the 6 tons yield.  During the first season from May to August 2016 and the second season from May to August last year of the study, both Semada varieties showed consistent yields of around 5 to 6 metric tons per hectare.  The harvest of the third season has also taken place.

The two varieties were chosen for the yield study in the country based on their capability and potential to yield up to 12 metric tons of paddy per hectare in one season in parts of paddy plantations in the Republic of Indonesia such as Java Island.  The research also discovered that paddy yield in Brunei Darussalam was much lower than in Indonesia because of the main factor of land problem which in general was asphalt and acidic.

Apart from the study with PT Biogene Plantation Company, the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism also collaborated with Yuan Longping High-Tech Agriculture Company Limited from the People's Republic of China in the research on hybrid paddy.  Meanwhile, the cooperation in planting hybrid paddy is currently in the supply of seedlings with the Ministry of Agriculture, Breeding and Irrigation of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.  Besides that the Ministry is also striving to improve the skills and expertise of officers, staff and farmers by organising intensive courses in hybrid paddy technology in preparation for mass scale planting.  The large scale planting of hybrid paddy will begin in May.
