International Women's Day 2018

 March 9th, 2018  |  10:08 AM  |   963 views

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The International Women's Day celebrated every 8th of March aims to appreciate and recognise women's contributions and role in society and the nation in the aspects of social, economy, culture and politics. Brunei Darussalam celebrates the International Women's Day by organising various programmes and activities with the collaboration of various non-governmental organisations. The government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam places great attention on the welfare and well-being of citizens and residents including women in the country.  This was stated by Yang Berhormat (Retired) Major General Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports in conjunction with the International Women's Day 2018.

In strengthening the country's commitment and support towards international efforts to protect women's rights, as well as to ensure and guarantee the rights of women in the country, His Majesty's Government signed and became a member of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) on 24th of May 2006. Special attention is also given towards empowering women's contributions in the development of society and the nation.

The commitment of His Majesty's government to women's issues is reflected in the National Plan of Action On Women under the Special Committee on Women. In line with the women's status as the vital nerve of the family and in supporting the country's development, His Majesty's Government through the Special Committee under the Social Issues National Council has designed an Action Plan specifically on issues related to women in line with the CEDAW. The implementation of the Action plan through the Whole of Nation approach will ensure integrated action will be taken by all relevant agencies in women's affairs including grassroot parties and non-government organisations.

This year's International Women's Day celebrated through the International Women's Day campaign with a hashtag #pressforprogress. The campaign is widely promoted through social media, to advocate women's achievement to continuously active in achieving success in various fields with the support from several parties in ensuring their roles in the country's development.
