BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

The 12th Associated Country Women of the World, ACWW, Conference - held recently in Jakarta, Indonesia, discussed "90 Years for Women's Rights, 90 Years of Building Opportunities" as the theme of the meeting. Brunei was represented by the Women's Institute (W-I) at the conference. Since its establishment more than 90 years ago, the London-based ACWW is the biggest women organisation in the world, with more than 9-million members from 73 countries.

The Women's Institute has been collaborating with the ACWW since Brunei becomes its member in 1965. According to Dayang Hajah Shamsiah binti Abdul Latif, W-I's General Secretary, the organisation's membership in ACWW has facilitated the country to attend international and regional conferences in promoting global exchanges pertaining to women's rights. She said the conference in Jakarta has deliberated on a wide range of issues including drug abuse, health, family and experience-sharing.
