The symposium is jointly organised by the Faculty of Science, the Institute For Biodiversity and Environmental Research and the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Centre For Islamic Studies, Universiti Brunei Darussalam, UBD.

Upon arrival, His Majesty who is also the Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, was greeted by Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, the Minister of Education as the Chairman of the UBD Council, Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia Doctor Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Juned, the State Mufti and Datin Doctor Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, the Vice Chancellor Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

The ceremony began with the recital of Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat led by the State Mufti.

In her welcoming address, the Vice Chancellor of UBD highlighted Brunei Darussalam's wealth of bio-diverse Tropical Forest resources and that the UBD has identified the study of herbs and complementary medicine as the key focus for research and development.

His Majesty then delivered the titah to declare the symposium open.

The Monarch also consented to receive a "pasambah" or gift souvenir in the form of a book titled "Medicinal Plants of UBD Botanical Research Centre".

The State Mufti in a premier paper highlighted the benefits of 'ulam-ulaman' or medicinal foods from green herbaceous plants. Yang Berhormat Pehin also spoke about the UBD Botanical Research Centre which has collected nearly 300 species of herbs for study.

Three thousand participants representing Ministries, organisations and educational institutes in the country are attending the symposium.
