MP Riled By Errors

Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing

Electoral roll riddled with mistakes despite EC having sufficient time to correct them, says Tiong

Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing is disappointed that the state’s electoral roll for the coming election is riddled with mistakes although the Election Commission (EC) had ample time to go through the lists and spot the discrepancies.

Speaking to The Borneo Post by telephone from his office in Bintulu yesterday, Tiong said he only received the lists of voters on Monday and today is the last day to file any protests.

“Upon checking the electoral roll in Bintulu, we spotted quite a number of voters were registered at different addresses.

“These people have same MyKad number but are registered as voters in more than one address which means they could cast their votes more than once at different polling stations.

“The EC state director should explain why his officers did not spot these obvious irregularities and correct them in the electoral role despite being alerted by my office before.”

The Bintulu MP believed that similar mistakes also occurred in other constituencies, and he called on the state SPRM office to clean up the lists of voters and get rid of the multiple registrations of some voters.

“I give the state EC one week to clean up the electoral role and I register my protest against the lists. It is not difficult using the computer to spot the voters who were registered at different addresses as my office staff spotted them easily today (yesterday).

“I had tried to meet the state EC director in the past to discuss the mistakes but he never found time to meet me,” he said.

Tiong added that the EC must also get to the bottom of the matter to allay fears that electoral rolls were purposely compromised to give certain parties unfair advantage,

“If the mistakes were genuine then he must come down hard on the officers responsible otherwise the public could be led to believe that these were done on purpose.”

He stressed that the present electoral rolls should not be used for the next election if they were not corrected.
