The procession of the chariots to mark the beginning of Thaipusam began here Tuesday morning.
The golden chariot, which made its debut last year, left the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple on Queen Street at 5.05am.
Hundreds of people gathered at the temple as early as 4am to witness the placing of the "vel" (spear) on the chariot.
Meanwhile, the silver chariot left Kovil Veedu on Penang Street at 7.15am after the statue of Lord Muruga was placed on it.
Both the golden and silver chariots are expected to reach the Waterfall Hilltop Temple and Nattukotai Chettiar Temple in Waterfall Road by midnight.
