SEMPORNA

The Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained two men for turtle poaching yesterday.

Semporna MMEA director Lieutenant Commander Amiludin Yenggah, said acting on information received, a MMEA patrol boat patrolled the Kerindingan Island waters to monitor and prevent the catching and killing of turtles in the area.

He said about 1.30 am, a pump-boat was checked and two men were found without any identification documents. A check in the boat found four turtle shells and turtle hunting equipment.

The two suspects, aged 15 and 35 years old, who claimed they were ‘Bajau Laut’ from Omadal Island, were detained and will be investigated under the Wildlife Conservation Enactment 1997 and Immigration Act 1959/63.

Amiludin said turtle hunting and killing activity were occurring in the district because of the high demand for the meat by exotic meat eaters.   MMEA is always prepared to curb such illegal activity.
