The National Disaster Committee, the Belait District National Disaster Committee as well as the relevant government agencies and NGOs are working together to attend to residents affected by the floods in the Belait District. According to the Minister of Home Affairs, the affected residents are mostly made up of senior citizens. Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong was in the Belait District yesterday morning to take a closer look at the areas affected by the flood.
Among the areas visited were Sungai Mau, Jalan Kandul in Bukit Sawat and Jalan Laid Lakang. According to Yang Berhormat Pehin, most of the houses affected by flooding in the past 3 weeks are those located near or by the Belait River. The visit also provided an opportunity to hear the issues faced by families, which are mostly made up of senior citizens. Yang Berhormat Pehin also assured that due attention will be given to the affected residents and that they will work together with other government agencies and NGO's to work on ways to assist them in the immediate and long term.
According to Yang Berhormat Pehin, planning has been made to assist the flood-affected residents. In Sungai May for example, applications have been made by affected residents to build a 200-metre bridge that connects the road to their homes. Yang Berhormat Pehin sees this as a possibility for the private sector to contribute back as their Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR which can worked on as a collaboration between two parties. In the long term, however, Yang Berhormat Pehin said the matter will be further discussed at the National Disaster Council level to come up with ways to address the situation of high water level in the river.
