Man City cruise by Watford while Spurs win, Carroll saves West Ham

MANCHESTER

Manchester City got back to winning ways with a 3-1 win against Watford to maintain their unbeaten start to the Premier League season on Tuesday.

A Raheem Sterling strike inside of the first minute and a Christian Kabasele own goal saw Pep Guardiola's side two up before the quarter-hour mark.

Sterling's tap-in at the back post from a Leroy Sane cross after 39 seconds was the fastest Premier League goal this season and the fastest for Man City in the league since Jesus Navas scored 13 seconds into a contest against Tottenham in November 2013.

Sergio Aguero added Man City's third in the 63rd minute, tapping home from close range after Heurelho Gomes misplayed a whipped-in Kevin De Bruyne cross that fell right to the Argentina international.

Andre Gray redirected an Andre Carrillo cross in just past 80 minutes, but the goal was little more than consolation for the struggling visitors as City took all three points.

The result comes on the heels of a goalless draw against Crystal Palace on Dec. 31 that ended Man City's 18-match win streak, but the three points did restore their 15-point lead over Manchester United at the top of the table.

Fernando Llorente scored his first Premier League goal for Tottenham against his former club as Spurs won 2-0 amid a downpour at Swansea City.

Llorente had not found the net in the league since leaving Swansea -- where he scored 15 last season -- in the summer, but he found the breakthrough with a header following Christian Eriksen's free kick.

Replays showed the striker may have been offside when he scored, and a few minutes later he was incorrectly ruled offside when he was played in on goal.

Harry Kane did not start as he battled an illness but came off the bench in the second half and delivered a superb cross for Dele Alli to seal the result in the 89th minute.

Tottenham climbed within four points of the top-four, and still have a game in hand over fourth-placed Liverpool.

Andy Carroll scored a pair of second-half goals -- including a late winner -- to help West Ham climb out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win over West Brom.

A James McClean shot from 25 yards away in the 31st minute took a wicked deflection and beat Adrian in the West Ham goal to put Albion up 1-0 at half-time.

But Carroll, who had yet to score this season, had the hosts back on level terms just before the hour mark, rising over two West Brom defenders to smash an Aaron Cresswell cross into the back of the net.

And deep into stoppage time, Carroll turned in the winner from a tight angle after Marko Arnautovic's cross, sending the London Stadium into raptures.

Crystal Palace overcame an early deficit to win 2-1 away to Southampton, who are now only outside of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Shane Long ended a 35-match scoring drought to put Saints ahead in the 17th minute, but Palace were able to equalise in the 69th minute through James McArthur's volley following a set piece.

Palace were in front 10 minutes from time when Luka Milivojevic lashed home a first-time shot from the top of the box.
