ALOR SETAR, MALAYSIA
The remains of five of the six Indonesians killed in an arson attack were buried after DNA tests confirmed their identities.
The burial in Semeling, Sungai Petani, was held in the presence of Indonesia’s Consul-General to Penang Iwanshah Wibisono, Consul of Consular Affairs Machdaniar Nisfah and officers from the Kuala Muda district police headquarters after Friday prayers.
“The DNA tests took about a month and the results were out on Dec 12. We consider the process fast and thank the Malaysian police for all they have done,” Machdaniar said.
Moh Kholil, 40, his wife Umi, 35, Tobiyah, 60, Habi Tokriman, 40, and Misbah Hul Anuar, 17, were buried yesterday.
Tobiyah’s husband Samsul, 60, died of severe burns while in Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital on Nov 9 and was buried on Dec 7.
The Fire and Rescue Depart-ment on Wednesday declared that the Nov 7 fire which razed four houses in Kampung Baru Sungai Gelugor, Sungai Petani, was due to arson.
After a month’s probe, department director Abdul Razak Muda said investigators found elements of arson based on the discovery of liquid accelerants at the scene.
He said investigators found three spots where the fire began, indicating that it was started intentionally.
Kuala Muda district police chief Asst Comm Saifi Abdul Hamid said police were waiting for the full report and had yet to classify the case as arson.
