2 Filipino Nationals Embraced Islam

Two Filipino nationals recently embraced Islam in a conversion ceremony held at the home of Haji Kamsani bin Kamis in Kampong Jangsak, Jalan Gadong.

Present as the guest of honour was Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.

During the ceremony, 23-year-old Arvin Angel Dacumos took Awang Muhammad Awie bin Abdullah as his new Muslim name, while his relative, 42-yearold Bella Angel Maturan, changed her name to Nur Varisha binti Abdullah.

The new converts told the media representative that they had considered embracing Islam for a long time already, prior to their current employment in Brunei.

"When I was in the Philippines, I had only heard about the Islamic faith, and I gained more information when a friend gave me an English version of the Al-Quran," said Nur Varisha. "After coming to Brunei, the atmosphere and the kind treatment from the Muslim community encouraged me to convert to Islam. I am happy that this moment has come."

Following the formal declaration of faith, or Syahadah, tokens of appreciation were presented to the new converts by the guest of honour.

This was accompanied by the sprinkling of scented flowers on the converts and the recitation of the Dikir Marhaban.

Last year, 517 people across the country formally adopted Islam.

There were 190 Muslim conversions from January this year, of which 78 took place in the Brunei-Muara District.
