The Inter Company Netball Tournament, the last sporting event in the latest instalment of the Inter Company Sports Fest 2016, kicked off amidst much fanfare at the Public Works Department Sports Complex last night.
A total of 17 teams namely B.T Forwarding Company, Darussalam Assets Sdn Bhd, Aegis Secure Solutions Sdn Bhd, Baiduri Bank Group, DST, Kingston Beverage & Creamery Sdn Bhd, CIBFM/ AMBD, Jerudong Park Medical Centre, Standard Chartered Bank, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, KPMG, Telekom Brunei Berhad (Telbru), Royal Brunei Catering, Royal Brunei Airlines, PAR Food and Beverage Sdn Bhd, QAF (B) Sdn Bhd and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam will be vying for top honours.
B.T Forwarding Sdn Bhd are the defending champions after defeating DST in the final last year.
B.T forwarding team captain Nurafiqah @ Fatin Najlaa Samat shared that they will make every effort to retain the title even though it will be harder with a weight of expectation hanging over their shoulders.
"It is not easy for us to maintain the same level last year and we have to play more teams this year," said Nurafiqah.
B.T Forwarding has been drawn with JPMC, who lost their match against DST 12-7 last night, Royal Brunei Airlines, Darussalam Assets Sdn Bhd, KPMG, Aegis Solution, DST and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam in Group A.
When asked which of the teams Nurafiqah would like to avoid in the group draw, she said that all of the teams are strong.
Nurafiqah, who plays for the national team, will be designated as goal shooter in the tournament even though it is not her original position in a move to assist her team with the goals.
Even though the team has found little time to train together, Nurafiqah said that her team-mates have represented other clubs which she considered not a problem.
Asked how many goals her team need to score to stand any chances of winning, the BT Forwarding team captain who was part of the title-winning squad last year said that it is difficult to set a specific number due to the volatile nature of their opponents.
"However if we can, when we do get the ball, we must convert it into points which means we will not be careless. It is easy for us to lead and in netball it is difficult to figure out how many points we need as a benchmark to win," added Nurafiqah.
Nurafiqah concluded that there are replacements in the goal keeper and wing defence positions.
