Drill of major ‘crash’ spooks Penangites and goes viral

Mistaken for real: A viral photo of the mock accident and rescue operation at Jalan Ahmad Nor in Jelutong.

GEORGE TOWN

Video clips and pictures of a major “accident” in Jelutong near here involving a bus, a sports utility vehicle, a sedan and motorcycle went viral causing a stir among Penangites.

They were spooked by the sights of “dead” and “injured” victims lying on the road in blood-stained clothes.

But it was an emergency response drill involving a private hospital, Penang Hospital, police, Fire and Rescue Service Department, Civil Defence Force, St John Ambulance and the Malaysian Red Crescent Society.

Lam Wah Ee Hospital Emergency Services Department head Dr Mohamed Al-Hadi Mohamed Razhi said the hospital decided to carry out the exercise to better prepare for disasters.

“The scenario is a bus colliding into a SUV and a sedan which hits a motorcyclist. We have five ‘dead’ with some seriously injured and others with minor injuries.”

Dr Mohamed said the drill would be carried out as an annual programme from next year.

Some motorists travelling along Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim and Jalan Jelutong heading to the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway were caught off-guard when Jalan Ahmad Nor was closed for about 90 minutes.

“The only way to get into the expressway from Jelutong was to use Jalan Ahmad Nor and it was closed for the drill,” said a fuming motorist. “They should have at least informed us earlier about the road closure,” he said.
