INDONESIA

Salma Ali Salem Mansoor, has become the first teen holding dual citizenship to become officially Indonesian after she made her formal choice of citizenship at the Indonesian Consulate General in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

“Salma made her statement of citizenship at the Jeddah consulate general office in early 2017,” Consul General Hery Sariuddin said in a statement as reported by Tempo.co on Tuesday.

Salma had held dual citizenship from her father Ali Salem Mansoor from Yemen and Indonesian mother Suhanah Ahmad. She opted for her right to choose after she turned 18 years old, Hary added.

The General Law Administration Directorate General at the Law and Human Rights Ministry has recorded Salma as the first dual-citizenship child who made the choice in accordance with the 2006 Law on citizenship.

The processing of her Indonesian citizenship took four months to complete.

Under the 2006 law, when dual-citizenship children turn 18, they have three years to choose one citizenship. If within those three years they do not make a choice, they automatically lose the right to choose and the state will only recognize their foreign citizenship.
