A three-member delegation from the Singapore Islamic Scholars & Religious Teachers Association (Pergas), headed by its president Ustaz Mohammad Hasbi bin Hassan, recently made a goodwill visit to the Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA).
Pergas has chosen UNISSA to discuss opportunities and establish a bridge towards realising the goals of its organisation. Pergas also has its own educational institution recognised by the Institute of Islamic Studies of Pergas (IPIP).
Pergas is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) established in 1957 and is dedicated to improving the quality of education and welfare of Islamic religious teachers. The role of teachers of Islamic religion has evolved from a traditional leadership to a more challenging one that contributes to the formation of a positive public opinion towards the Muslim community.
This institution, produces scholars and religious teachers who play different roles in gaining and imparting specialised knowledge in different fields. Their role goes beyond the traditional classroom madrassas and mosques, which allows them to function as socio-religious scholars, lecturers, administrators, writers, research analysts, entrepreneurs and curriculum developers in mosques and other Islamic institutions.
To promote its objectives, it established Pergas Investment Holdings (PIH) in 2003, a dynamic firm committed to bringing Syariah and ethical solutions for a wide spectrum of customers, including from institutional, corporate and community sectors.
The meeting was chaired by Dr. Haji Mohammed Hussain bin Pehin Penyurat Haji Ahmad, Deputy Rector of UNISSA. Also present were Dr. Arman bin Haji Asmad, Assistant Rector, and several officers of UNISSA.
