SRI AMAN

SRI AMAN: Independent candidate for Simanggang, Dato Ngu Piew Seng, has promised to look into flooding issues here if elected.

On Tuesday, several parts of this town, including Taman Landin, Jalan Batang Lupar, Taman Siang and Kampung Resak, were flooded due to a downpour.

Ngu, who went to these areas, said the floods were caused by clogged drains.

“The people in these areas told me every time there’s heavy rain, there would be flooding due to blocked drains caused by accumulated garbage or overgrown weeds in the drains.

“The floods would last for about two days before receding,” said Ngu in a statement yesterday.

He added this was a problem that the local council and Public Works Department should look into to resolve it.

“Why is the assistant minister (Datuk Francis Harden), who is also the BN-SUPP candidate, not bothered to go take a look at the flood situation?

“The situation has persisted for the last 20 years, and those affected have given up complaining. However, it does not mean they should continue to suffer in silence.”

Ngu hoped the people could see the indifference of Harden and vote for him (Ngu) instead in the May 7 polls.

“I promise if I am elected, I would see to it that flooding problems in these areas be rectified so that the affected residents do not have to suffer whenever there is a downpour.”

Ngu also challenged DAP candidate Leon Jimat Donald to visit the flood prone areas under heavy rain.

“Being in politics does not mean merely talking about issues. Rather, it is about going to the ground to solve issues. A good politician must walk the talk.”

On DAP’s consistent challenge to Ngu to reveal the true motive of Ngu standing as an independent against Harden, Ngu said he did not have to respond.

“All that DAP wants is votes, and when they see that I have some winning chances, they started to attack me and try to impose their dream of taking over the government onto the people and influence them not to vote for me.

“What they are doing is to split my support. By doing so, they are only helping Harden. If we can’t bring Harden down this time, it would be harder in the next election.  The people will continue to suffer.”

Ngu said whether he won or not was a small matter.

“I have my business and my family to go back to. But what about Sri Aman people? They will continue to be led by an elected representative who does not care about them and the development of Sri Aman. Is that what DAP wants to see?”
