If your other half’s snoring keeps you awake at night, there may be a disturbing but effective solution,

Apparently, taping up the mouth forcing the snorer to breath through their nose really works.

It goes without saying that you shouldn’t try this at home, but a US study suggests the solution could be a really novel way of tackling sleep apnoea.

Instead of using the kidnapper approach – duct tape – the study trialled a new device that sticks to the outside of the mouth to stop it opening.

It has a little hole which means air can still pass in and out but reduces the air flow through the mouth, which is crucial to stopping snoring.

The study is based on the science of snoring.

People who snore or suffer sleep apnoeas – where the tissues in the throat collapse repeatedly during the night – do so when cold air hits the back of the throat at high speed causing it to vibrate.

The theory is that breathing through your nose alone, heats up the air, meaning it is not as turbulent and therefore doesn’t cause the same vibrations..

The standard treatment for sleep apnoeas at the moments is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).

This involves a huge face mask that the patient wears while sleeping but is bulky and therefore not always popular.
