MUARA, BRUNEI-MUARA
The South Korean navy destroyer, Choi Young, was open to the public at the Muara Port yesterday.
Visitors were briefed on the ship's history as they were brought on a tour of the deck, bridge and wheel house.
Photography was prohibited inside the ship but was allowed on the front and rear deck.
Kang Seung Yee, who came with her mother and siblings, said that there was no opportunity in Korea to visit the navy ships and it was her first time onboard such a ship.
She said that she and her family made the visit to gain knowledge on Korean navy ships and show their support for the Korean troops.
Another visitor was a Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) student who identified herself only as Nazurah. "We saw the photos and read the articles about the ship in the newspapers. So once we found out from my Korean lecturer that the ship was open to the public, we decided to have a look. This was a good opportunity as these ships are rarely open to the public in most countries."
The Choi Young is a Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin-class destroyer named after the Korean General Choi Young.
The ship currently has 302 crew members and for the past five months the ship has been protecting merchant ships from piracy in the Gulf of Aden which is located in the Arabian Sea.
The ship will be heading to Singapore to pick up VBSS (Visit Board Search and Seizure) team members before returning to South Korea.
