President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has reiterated that higher education institutions must better cope with vast technological developments in order to remain competitive in the global arena.
“The social behavior landscape has also been changing. The shift from offline to online is massive,” Jokowi said during the 60th Dies Natalis of Diponegoro University in Semarang, Central Java, on Tuesday.
“If the social interaction landscape is changing, then we, nationally and in regions too, must deal with it,” he told thousands of students of the university.
“Look at the way the youth get news today. They no longer read newspapers. They opt to go online, through their gadgets. We must be aware there is transformation ongoing,” the President said.
Jokowi added that he had ordered his Cabinet members to improve vocational education institutions in order to boost the technological capacity of Indonesian youth.
He also suggested that Diponegoro University open digital-themed courses such as Digital Economy, Financial Technology and Digital Commerce.
The university’s rector, Yos Johan Utama, said the university had been improving to become a global education destination.
“In term of research, we are number one in Indonesia,” he said, citing rankings by the Research, Technology and Higher Education Ministry.
The ministry ranked the university the sixth-best in Indonesia in 2017. (bbs)
