KOTA KINABALU, SABAH

Iconic long distance runner Sefli Ahar did the country proud again by finishing first in the 42km veteran category at the Borneo International Marathon 2016 in Kota Kinabalu.

The victory was Sefli's first at the competition, as he completed the race with a time of 2:51.27s.

Second place went to Briton Michael Morris (3:06.35s) while Thai Prasoet Phaisan finished third 3:09.18s.

Sefli's winning time was faster than the second-placed runner in the men's open.

MA Ling Wu of China recorded 2:55.10s.

Sefli, who celebrates his 43rd birthday in a few weeks' time, said, "I am really happy that I could maintain my form to win the event this year as I could only finish fourth in previous years."

His next competition will be the firefighter-themed charity on June 5.
