7th UNISSA Convocation

182 graduates received Doctor of Philosophy or PhD, Master and Bachelor degrees as well as diplomas and certificates in various fields and levels of study during the 7th Haflut Takharruj or Convocation Ceremony of the Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University today. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Dipertuan of Brunei Darussalam presented the degrees, diplomas and certificates to the graduates. The ceremony was held at the ICC in Berakas.

Upon arrival, His Majesty was welcomed by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education as the Chairman of the UNISSA Council and Doctor Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal, the Rector of the university as the Chairman the 7th UNISSA Convocation ceremony.
Also present was His Royal Highness Prince Doctor Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister's Office who is also the Pro-Chancellor of the Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, UNISSA.
To seek blessings from Allah, Quranic verses were read by Awang Muhammad Hashim bin Abdullah, a graduate of the Bachelor of Usuluddin Tafsir and Hadith programme. Meanwhile, the Hadith was read by Awang Mohammad Marzuqi bin Sabtu, a graduate of the Bachelor of Law and Shari'ah Law programme. The interpretation of the Quranic verses and the Hadith were read by Sheikh Husrin Jairul Azry bin Sheikh Hassan, another graduate of the Bachelor of Law and Shari'ah Law.
In the welcoming address, the Rector of UNISSA among other matters outlined the positive development and progress achieved by UNISSA in 10 years of its establishment. Among them was the establishment of the Halalan Tayyiban or Halal Research Centre. UNISSA also reassessed the courses offered, and provided suitable new structuring and contents including getting the recognition or accreditation of authoritative and prestigious foreign institutions.
His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam then pronounced the graduation to begin the conferment of the Doctorates, degrees, diplomas and certificates to the graduates.
Of the 182 graduates today, one received the Doctor of Philosophy, 38 received Master degrees, 6 received Diplomas in Islamic Law and Syari'e Court Matters, 14 received Post Graduate Diplomas, 95 received Bachelor degrees and three graduates received the special degree in Memorising 30 Chapter of Al-Quran. Meanwhile two graduates received the Dirasaat Islamiyah Higher National Diplomas and 23 received the 'Barnamij al-Tarqiyah' Enhancement Programme Certificates and Certificate of Syari'ah Criminal Justice System.
This year is the second time the Shari'ah and Law Faculty has produced graduates from the 5-year double degree programme, the Bachelor of Law and Shari'ah Law. 8 graduates received the twin degrees. This year UNISSA also offered programmes under the Halal Tayyiban Research Centre and Islamic Development Management Faculty as a way to further diversify courses to produce a highly educated generation inline with Wawasan Brunei 2035.
Since its establishment, UNISSA has achieved encouraging success. The university has attracted local and international students, at the same time witnessing recognition as an authoritative Islamic Studies hub or centre. UNISSA continues to be outstanding with the increase of networking between it and local and foreign universities through various memoranda of understanding. Sending its excellent students through the Foreign Studies Programme to Jordan, Malaysia, Oman, the United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates also showed encouraging improvement.
Today UNISSA has one thousand and ninety six students attending 37 academic programmes at five faculties and 3 Centres of Academic Excellence, simultaneously seeing an average 19 percent yearly increase in student's enrolment.
Doa Selamat was read by the State Mufti. Since UNISSA started offering the Islamic Studies Programme in the region, it has become an alternative place for regional and international students to further their studies. Around 19 percent of UNISSA students today are international students and up to today, the university has received 197 international students from 34 countries.
