A boyhood Oldham fan, Paul Scholes has no previous managerial experience.

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes is a candidate to become the next manager of Oldham Athletic, sources have told ESPN FC.

Scholes met officials from the League One side on Wednesday morning to discuss the possibility of replacing John Sheridan, who was sacked last month.

Richie Wellens, a former youth team player at Old Trafford, has led Oldham to three consecutive wins since taking over from Sheridan on a temporary basis.

Wellens has made it clear he would like the job permanently, but now faces competition from Scholes.

Scholes, a boyhood Oldham fan, has no managerial experience but was part of Ryan Giggs' coaching staff at United when the Welshman was made caretaker manager for four games in 2014 following David Moyes' dismissal.

The 42-year-old is also part-owner of Conference North side Salford City along with Giggs and former United teammates Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Nicky Butt.

Oldham have also spoken to Clarence Seedorf about the manager's job, although the former Netherlands international is now out of the running.

Sources say the four-time Champions League winner is keen to secure a job in England, but will only consider offers from the Premier League and the Championship.

Scholes spent 20 years in the first team at United, making 718 appearances between 1993 and 2013.

He won 11 Premier League titles at Old Trafford and was capped 66 times by England before announcing his retirement in 2004.
