Christians marked Good Friday with prayers, fasting and abstinence as they commemorated the day Jesus Christ was crucified.
Churches held several solemn services over the day, with hymns, prayers of thanksgiving and a message centred on Christ’s suffering.
The churches of St Francis Xavier, Assumption and St Ignatius here were packed with parishioners during Mass.
The Adoration of the Holy Cross was the highlight of the service, preceded by the Way of the Cross devotion, marking 14 important incidents in Jesus Christ’s crucifixion over 2,000 years ago.
Good Friday, also known as “Holy Friday”, is the Friday preceding Easter Sunday.
At the Church of Divine Mercy in Sungai Ara, Penang, parish priest Rev Father Martin Andrews Arlando described the kissing of the Cross as an act of adoration of Jesus.
In Kota Kinabalu, Christians attended Good Friday services at the various churches.
Parishioners revered the crucifix, kneeling and kissing it as a sign of worship. Masses in different languages started at 3pm.
Over at the St Joseph’s Cathedral in Miri, Bishop Richard Ng, who is head of the 80,000 Catholics in the Miri diocese, said the washing of the feet symbolised an act of service to others.
“Jesus washed the feet of his apostles on the night before his crucifixion, humbling himself to be a servant to others.
“We are reminded to give ourselves to others in humility and love, to sacrifice for others. Christians must overcome their self-centredness and ask how they can serve others in need,” he said in his homily.
Easter vigils will be held tonight, with grand prayer celebrations tomorrow to usher in the Easter season.
