PETALING JAYA

The tourism sector contributed RM73.3bil to Malaysia's gross national income (GNI) last year, said Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz.

"The Government's decision to enable e-visa applications from China, including a visa free option, saw immediate results with a 26.7% increase in Chinese visitors last year. This facility was subsequently extended to other countries like India," Nazri said in his speech at the launch of the Malaysia Business Events Week 2017 on Monday.

He said the establishment of the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) under the Economic Transformation Programme outlined the country's priorities towards the development of Malaysia as a high-income nation, primarily as an economic contributor and catalyst for job creation and employment.

"In a nutshell, Malaysia's business events industry will deliver 16,720 in jobs creation more than RM3.9bil in GNI and 2.9 million business event visitors by 2020," he added.
