BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Friday Sermon

The country's Haj pilgrims will return home from Makkah Al-Mukaramah soon, with the first Haj flight scheduled to arrive on Monday. Traditionally the welcome for them would include building arches at their homes, putting up banners and holding Dikir Marhaban and Doa Selamat ceremonies.

The Friday sermon today focused on the welcome saying while it is not wrong, it should not deviate from the teachings of Islam.  Most importantly the ceremony is a way to express happiness and gratitude to Allah the Almighty for the safe return of the pilgrims.

According to the Imam or prayer leaders, Islam teaches certain ethics on how to welcome home the haj pilgrims. It is sunnat or preferable that the pilgrims pray at the mosque first before returning to their houses.

They should shake hands with relatives and friends before entering the house and supplicate: 'May Allah Grant you the Haj and forgive all sins and bad deeds as well as replace what you have spent.'  The prayer leaders remain the congregants it is wrong to touch hands or hug one another between men and women except the 'mahram' or close relatives for whom marriage between them is prohibited.

The returning pilgrims should supplicate from themselves and other before entering the house for their prayers would be granted by Allah the Almighty.
