181 villages in seven districts of Savannakhet Province have been reportedly affected by the tropical storm Sonca which brought heavy rains to the province and other parts of the country on Jul 24-28.

A total area of 15,680 ha of farmland, houses and agriculture production areas are under water, said an official of the provincial agriculture and forestry department.

Flood events have been reported in five districts of Champhone, Songkhone, Sonnaboury, Thabangthong, Xayboury, and Ardsaphangthong affecting more than 40,700 people since the storm hit the province in late July.

The natural disaster has left more than 30 cattle drown, hundreds of fold animals killed, 265 fish ponds flooded and eight irrigation facilities damaged.

President of the Lao Front for National Construction, Mr Xaysomphone Phomvihane in recent weeks provided relief items including rice, instant food products, drinking water and some medicines worth 70 million kip to flood victims’ families in Champhone and Xonnabourly districts.

Xaysombat Technology College of Savannakhet also donated consumer’s goods to help flood victims in Ardsaphone district where 27 villages and over 500 ha of farmland have been affected by floodwater.
