London Banker Freed in Probe of Jogger Pushing Woman Near Bus

 August 13th, 2017  |  13:36 PM  |   1115 views

LONDON

Eric Bellquist, a partner at Hutton Collins & Co., was dismissed by Metropolitan Police as the jogger who pushed a woman into the path of a London bus.

The man arrested on Thursday on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm was released with no further action, and is no longer part of the investigation, the police said in a statement Saturday. They added that their inquiries continue and appealed to the public for assistance.

The 41-year-old private-equity specialist had been arrested in connection with the May 5 incident on Putney Bridge over the Thames River. Bellquist was out of the country when the assault occurred, his lawyer said on Friday.

Pictures from closed-circuit cameras showing a jogger on the south London Bridge during rush hour pushing a 33-year-old woman into the road were widely shared by British media in a bid to track down the culprit. Police said they arrested a suspect at a property in the Chelsea area, taken to a south London station and later released.

The woman tried to speak to the jogger when he ran across the other side of the bridge 15 minutes later but he failed to acknowledge her, police said. Police released video of the incident, and said they got a good response from requests for information about the jogger.

Bellquist had “irrefutable proof” he was in the U.S. at the time of the incident, his lawyer said in a statement on Friday, adding that they expected a “swift resolution” of the matter.

Bellquist, a graduate of the University of Colorado, joined Hutton Collins in 2002 having worked in the leverage finance group at Lehman Brothers, according to his biography on the firm’s website. He sits on the boards of Byron Hamburgers and Wagamama restaurants, the company said.
