The Tutong Sixth Form Centre (PTE Tutong) held a forum for its teaching staff yesterday.
The forum covered two topics related to improving student learning. The first presentation was a joint project by the English Department of PTE Tutong on inculcating reading culture. This was followed by another collaborative project presented by Economics tutors who discussed how their collaborative teaching benefited students and teachers.
The first speaker, Fleur Hanekom, General Paper (GP) tutor at PTE Tutong, in her presentation titled 'English reading project - Creating a reading culture on the school', highlighted the importance of effective reading skills on academic performance.
The investigation for the paper was carried out in collaboration with Rajasegar Rama Krishnan and Dayang Hajah Nurulhuda binti Haji Mohamad, other tutors from her department.
"The poor reading skills of most Sixth Form students at PTE Tutong affect their results. Students generally do not like to read," said Hanekom. "They prefer to read fiction and find it daunting to engage meaningfully with appropriate and relevant texts."
She shared that the' English Department has decided to implement a compulsory reading project for all Lower Six English 'O' Level and General Paper students to encourage independent reading and develop good reading habits that will support students in present and further studies. She said her study was based on discussions with and feedback from both teachers and students.
The second presentation shared the collaborative work of Awang Hafizuddin Hassan, Sharon Lim Meau Ying, Chong Chin Yee, Dayang Nur Najmah Matshah and Dr. Vincent Andrew. They co-presented their work titled 'A case study of the impact of collaborative teaching on student and teacher learning'.
During the case study, Economics students were taught through the combined effort of the teachers. Using the action research framework of planning, teaching and evaluation, they were able to explore the effects of collaborative teaching on student learning and the impact it has on the teachers involved. Despite the challenges, collaborative teaching can provide a meaningful arrangement that can be used by teachers to improve students' experience and learning in classrooms as well as improve the teachers' own experience of teaching.
"Collaborative teaching should be tried at least once in a year. It can open the teachers' eyes to what the students are thinking," Dr Vincent added. "Teachers can teach more powerful lessons if they listen to their students and ask what needs to be learned rather than what needs to be taught."
The forum concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the presenters by Awang Almasri bin Haji Sulaiman, Deputy Principal (Administration) of PTE Tutong.
