BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Muslims are urged to protect the five main principles in daily life in order to ensure the goodness of life on earth and in the hereafter. The five principles are to glorify the religion's purity, appreciate life, care for the mind, preserve descendants and protect properties as well as purifying them. Caring for the mind is vital in life as it is a highly valuable reward from Allah Subhanahu Wataala. Caring for the mind includes to always increase beneficial knowledge for the well-being of the individual, community welfare and nation's development. This was touched upon in today's Friday Sermon entitled 'Importance of Reading in Life'.

The imam or prayer leader in the sermon said that as muslims, we must make reading as a culture or daily practice as it can shape a knowledgeable individual who can achieve good success on earth and the hereafter. Therefore, parents as the closest individuals to their children must act as role models by showing interest in reading to children so that they are reading from a young age such as reading Al-quran, stories on the prophets and companions, kitab or books containing appropriate teachings or lessons to be exemplified, materials containing information sources such as newspapers, practical books and others.

Therefore, it should be known that through reading, a person can gain benefits and advantages among them increasing knowledge, enhance memory strength and is a mental exercise because it activates brain cells and makes the mind healthier. Reading also trains oneself to become a person who is disciplined and enhances creativity, improves grammatical skills and better assist in ways of communication. Thus, awareness on the importance of a reading culture is the main factor to the success of one of the Wawasan Brunei 2035 namely producing highly educated, skilled and successful citizens. By making reading as a practice or culture, it can encourage the community to be knowledge literate especially in making a success of the national development programme.
