A controlling boyfriend has been jailed after he kicked his girlfriend’s dog to death – because it ‘messed in the house’.
Bruce Elliott was jailed for 19 weeks at South Tyneside Magistrates’ Court following the horrific attack on Smudge the Jack Russell.
Appearing in court, the father-of-two complained he would lose his business and his house after details were revealed.
Magistrates heard that the dog was found dying outside of Morrisons supermarket in Denton Park, Newcastle, by a passer-by on October 26 last year.
Prosecuting on behalf of the RSPCA, Judith Curry said: ‘When the witness found her he said she was out of breath and didn’t react when he stroked her.
‘He said it was as if she was breathing her last breath.’
The witness recognised Elliott from a description given by someone who had seen him with the dog and went round to his house.
Elliott then walked to the supermarket car park, snatched the dog and took her back to his house, refusing the take her to the vets.
RSCPA inspector, Helen Bestwick, visited the house to check on Smudge and called the police when Elliott became aggressive.
She eventually managed to get to Smudge but it was too late – and she was pronounced dead at a nearby veterinary surgery.
It later emerged Elliott had kicked the little dog after getting annoyed at it for messing in the house, the court heard.
Elliott, of Lordenshaw, West Denton, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal – one count for kicking the dog and another for preventing the dog from getting treatment.
He was sentenced to 15 weeks in prison for the animal cruelty offences.
He also admitted harassing his new girlfriend, Paris Dixon, and was given a four-week jail term for that offence.
