Brunei Sprint Duo Entered Semi-Finals at 78th Singapore Open Track and Field Championships

Brunei sprint duo Md Asy Syafi'e Md Bohari and Md Fakhri Ismail reached the semi-finals in the 100m at the 78th Singapore Open Track and Field Championships at the National Stadium of the Singapore Sports Hub yesterday.
Neither athlete succeeded in breaking their personal bests as Md Asy Syafi'e could only clocked 10.95s while Mohd Fakhri Ismail finished in 10.99s well short of his national record of 10.59s he sets last year in the SEA Games.
The national athletes sealed qualification to the semifinals with the former finishing second in the preliminaries behind Thai favourite Jirapong Meenapra with a time of 10.81s, while the latter finished third behind Indonesia's
Dwi Nugroho Yudi and Singapore's Khairyll Amri with a time of 10.86s.
However, they failed to make the eight-entrant final as Md Asy Syafi'e fell short in 14th place and Md Fakhri dropping to 16th overall in the 49-entrant field.
Meanwhile, national middle distance runner Md Wa'iz Rusyaidi Md Shahrun accomplished a personal best with
a time of 4:34.74 slashing his previous mark of 4:45 during the 5th Brunei Open last October.
b National middle to long distance running coach Suleiman Nyambui heaped praise to his pupil following news of his new personal best in Singapore.
"I am so happy because of the massive improvement he had made after being given exposure. Now, what he
needs is to learn from this competition," said Suleiman.
Over to the women's 100m, Brunei first female Olympian Maziah Mahusin failed to qualify for the semi-finals after completing her race in the preliminaries with a time of 12.65s, which was short of her best time of 12.58s.
Maziah will return to the track today in the 200m alongside SEA Games gold medallist Shanti Pereira and SEA Games bronze medallist Thi Oanh Nguyen while Md Wa'iz Rusyaidi will feature in the 800m.
Indonesia's Iswandi Abdul Hamid won the 100m event while Selvaretnam Komalam Shally emerged victorious in the women's 100m event.
Philippines' Guarte Mervin won the 1500m with a time of 4:02.72.
