2016 Seafood Carnival Held at Muara Fish Landing Complex

MUARA, BRUNEI-MUARA

Seafood lovers flocked to the opening of the Seafood Carnival 2016 yesterday held at the Muara Fish Landing Complex.

Among main attractions at the four-day event, which is organised by the Fisheries Department under the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT), are freshly caught seafood and aquaculture products, such as sea bass, pompano, grouper and red snapper.

Reasonable prices will also hopefully attract the crowd - `Bakulan Kemayau' (Bluefin Tuna) is being sold for $5 for three apiece and $2 for one; Tiger prawns are sold at $18 per kilo (compared to the usual $20 per kilo), while the Grouper fish is offered for $10 instead of the market selling price of $12.

According to Nur Aqilah binti Timbang, head of the organising committee, nine operators from the aquaculture sector, seven from live capture and 12 from processing are taking part in the event.

The processing sector is also selling various seafood products, such as keropok (cracker snacks), belacan (shrimp paste) and salted fish.

Meanwhile, the Fisheries Department has put up some posters at the venue, reminding all fishmongers and vendors on the importance of good hygiene while handling and preparing seafood.

Nur Aqilah added that the Fisheries Department will continue to monitor hygiene standards at all hypermarkets, fish markets and control posts to ensure the safety of products being sold in the country.

The Seafood Carnival is open from 8 to 5pm over the four-day period, with the exception of Friday, when it operates from 8am to 11am, then resumes business again from 2 to 5pm.
