KUALA BELAIT
Child visitors to the Kuala Belait Library were recently entertained by a science show put on for their benefit, by two staff members from the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC).
With 'Liquid Nitrogen' as the main subject, Allen and Albert amazed their young audience with feats of icy-cold tricks, while explaining the many uses of the element in its liquid form, including making ice-cream.
The science duo safely demonstrated the shrinking of a balloon, and the instantaneous freezing of a banana, caused by the sub-zero freezing temperatures of the fluid, at 196 degrees Celsius.
The excited children were also given the opportunity to handle a frozen tennis ball, a by-product of the experiments.
The science show is part of an ongoing school holiday activity themed, 'Sioknya Sains' (Science is Fun), which began in libraries across the Sultanate on March 19.
One of the attendants at the Kuala Belait Library, Dayang Norliza binti Salleh, said the recent OGDC Science Show was the very first of its kind, held on the library premises.
The library also organises activities for children under the age of 12, and for adolescents aged 12 to 20 years.
School holiday activities at the Kuala Belait Library will continue until March 31, with a final science show from the OGDC, and a prize presentation ceremony for children who took part in the activities.
