The bilateral trade volume between Laos and China in 2016 reached more than US$2.34 billion, an official from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce has disclosed.
Of the total amount, US$1.35 billion was the volume of Laos’ exports to China last year, while the imported volume from China reached US$990 million.
Laos’s exports to China were mainly agriculture products, which saw an increase of 40 percent, of which 19.4 percent was milled rice.
Minister of Industry and Commerce Khemmany Pholsena said at a Laos-China Joint Cooperation Commission for 2017 in Vientiane on July 6 that China’s investment in Laos has grown constantly, which has brought benefits to the national development and contributed to the poverty reduction.
Up to the end of 2016, there were a total of 765 projects worth more than US$7 billion invested in by Chinese investors.
The investment covered 14 main sectors, including mining, hydropower, agriculture, and service. This figure did not exclude the construction of the China-Laos High Speed Railway Project.
China ranked as the largest foreign investor in the Lao PDR in 2016.
