MOSCOW

President Trần Đại Quang asserted that Việt Nam treasures and prioritises developing its comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia at a meeting with Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko in Moscow on Wednesday.

The Vietnamese leader spoke highly of the outcomes of the Speaker’s visit to Việt Nam in February 2017, especially the organisation of a seminar on local collaboration.

President Quang expressed hope that the Federation Council would continue supporting Russian localities to strengthen ties with Vietnamese provinces and cities, in accordance with both sides’ potential and demand.

He also believed that Speaker Matviyenko would further contribute to intensifying and enhancing relations between the Federation Council and the Vietnamese National Assembly and between Russia and Việt Nam in general.

Speaker Matviyenko said the President’s visit to Russia "is of significance to bilateral relations as its outcomes will be a driving force for Russia-Việt Nam co-operation in all fields".

She affirmed that the relationship between the two legislatures plays an important role in Russia-Việt Nam ties and appreciated the two bodies’ regular organisation of meetings and dialogues as well as their close coordination at international inter-parliamentary forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), and the Meeting of Speakers of Eurasian Countries’ Parliaments.

At the meeting, the two sides agreed to work together to raise two-way trade to US$10 billion by 2020 and pledged to strengthen cooperation in the fields of energy, defence-security, education-training, culture, tourism and science-technology.

They also promised to maintain close coordination at multilateral forums, especially during the Việt Nam APEC Year 2017. – VNS
