The Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) has allocated RM1.38  million worth of assistance to a total of 1,378 mosques and suraus across the state. Of the amount, more than RM300,000 is meant for 99 mosques and 222 suraus in this division alone.

According to Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, the ‘zakat’ (tithe) collection last year increased to RM72 million from RM68 million in 2015.

“Apart from the RM72 million in tithe collection, we also gained income from assets worth RM28 million from last year. Muslims are obligated to contribute to tithe,” he said before handing out the assistance yesterday.

Abang Johari also called upon the Muslims in the state to remain united so that Sarawak would continue to progress and prosper. He said the Muslims should also enhance the understanding among themselves, especially when they are in ‘jemaah’ (congregation).

“If we have undivided unity, our state would be stronger; when we have a stronger Sarawak, we could progress further.”

Abang Johari also observed that there are not enough mosques for the Muslims to conduct their Friday prayer. In this regard, he said he would be looking at upgrading more suraus into mosques so that the Muslims would not have to worry about overcrowding.

“As for the assistance, I hope the mosque and surau committees would continue to carry out activities, especially during the Ramadan month, for the betterment of the community.

“Let’s work together to reach out to those in need during Ramadan. If we are capable of helping, we should help all we can,” he added.

At the function, Celcom Mobile Sdn Bhd also presented business tithe worth RM193,930 to Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak.

The ceremony was witnessed by MIS president Datu Misnu Taha and Tabung Baitulmal Sarawak general manager Datu Abang Mohd Shibli Abang Mohd Nailie.
