Sing The Negaraku, Or Line Up!

No way out: Some of the 25 illegal immigrant workers being screened during the operation.

GEORGE TOWN

Some of illegal foreign workers being rounded up brazenly told Immigration enforcers that they were Malaysians.

But in front of pressmen, the enforcers simply asked them to sing the Negaraku.

When they could not, they were curtly told to file in with the rest.

Penang Immigration Department picked up 25 foreign workers at an entertainment centre located in a shopping mall here at 8pm on Wednesday.

Department assistant director Khwaja Banthey Navaz Mohamed Haneef said the foreign workers – 11 Bangladeshi men, five Indonesian men, three Indonesian women, three Vietnamese men, one Vietnamese woman and two men from India - were brought back to the department for further investigations.

He said the operation, codenamed Ops Ikrar, involved 35 officers from the department.

“We raided another entertainment outlet in Farquhar Street where we checked three people, but they were not arrested,” he said.

He said the foreigners were being investigated for various offences.
